From 70,000 year old cave drawings to Warhol, the Pyramids of Giza to the newly finished Sagrada Familia, Mozart to Bob Dylan, humans have shared a common impulse to create. Humans create to find healing and joy, to ask questions and express ideas, to entertain and connect with others. Creativity doesn’t feed, clothe, or house, yet it’s an essential part of our individual and collective lives. Similar to Anthony Bourdain’s shows, I’m interested in exploring our shared experience and celebrating the human spirit. I started my life feeling without a place to belong and searching for one. Art and creativity gave that to me and much more; purpose, friendships, travel, and a career. For me, it arrived in the form of painting, but for others, it’s form might be dance, writing, theater, fashion, architecture or music. Whether amateur or professional, a child with finger paints or Michelangelo, let’s explore this magical and mysterious thing we call creativity.

My Indiana Muse is an intimate 44-minute documentary that follows acclaimed painter Robert Townsend as he embarks on a decade-long artistic journey inspired by an unexpected muse: Helen. What begins with the discovery of a single photographic slide evolves into an extraordinary body of work, as Robert devotes months to each painting in an effort to capture the essence of one remarkable woman. From the first brushstroke to gallery exhibitions, the film offers a rare glimpse into the creative process while revealing the profound impact Helen has on the artist and everyone whose lives she touches.
